A. PREPRESS

J.M. Graphics can produce jobs from a variety of sources. We can provide typesetting/layout services and accept crc or laser art for basic printing. In addition, we can use your disk or digital file for more critical designs and 4-color process. While desktop publishing has decreased pre-press time in most cases, some digital files are not as sophisticated as others and with our 20+ years experience, we can troubleshoot certain areas and fix potential problems. We can make your basic black and white job pop by inserting elements such as screens, reverses and even take a 1-color design and create a 2-color job without  much extra cost.
Our prepress also includes both metal and plastic plates. For small press one color work or simpler two color work where type is not touching and separation is possible, plastic plates are the perfect fit for short run (less than 5,000 impressions) jobs where cost is the most important factor. On jobs where registration is more critical or the run is longer, metal plates are necessary. We have a dedicated stripper that handles all stripping for metal plates. Because we offer stripping, we also have a metal plate burner and metal plate processor. The plastic plates are cut, imaged and processed in one machine, our Itek plate processor.

B. PRESSES
1. Small Presses

We have 2 AB Dick 9810's. One has a super T-head and a drying unit. These units can run paper from 3" x 5" up to 13.5" x 17.75", with a maximum image area of 12.5" x 17.25". They can run stock as thin as 12# bond up to 14pt. C2S. At maximum speed, the AB Dicks can run 10,000 impressions per hour, but for normal use, use 5-6,000 impressions per hour is typical. For smaller to medium runs of 1 or 2 color jobs, the duplicators are a great value. Typical jobs for the AB Dicks include flyers, letterhead, envelopes, business cards and brochures.

2. Large Presses

For longer runs and those with 3 or more colors, our Omni-Adast's are the presses of choice. The 725-P is our 2-color large press and the 745-P is the 4-color press. Both have perfecting units and dryers on them. The 4-color is able to perfect 2/2 printing and the 2-color is able to perfect 1/1 printing. The maximum sheet size that can be run is 19" x 25" with a maximum image area of 18" x 24". At full throttle, the presses are capable of 8,000 sheets/hour, but realistic runs of 5,000-6,000 per hour should be expected. Vivid 4-color pieces and booklets are the bread and butter of these presses. We are competitive on jobs up to 5,000 lbs. of paper and usually beat web presses on jobs of $5,000 or less.

C. INK & STOCK

In addition to mixing our own inks, we also save money by purchasing paper in skid quantities instead of cut sheet size and use our knife to cut the stock to size. We then enjoy the stock cutting cost savings and get a volume discount. We also pay all bills in enough time to get the 2% discount that most paper houses offer. From time to time, when paper houses have an over-run of stock and offer discount incentives to clear their warehouses, we have the resources to purchase multiple skids of commonly used stock which we use when customers are flexible with stock preference.
Another way we have cut costs is by mixing all our own inks. We went to the best source we knew, our pressmen, and had them test all major brands of ink to find the one that they thought ran the best with the best color quality. Once they settled on one brand, we began to order exclusively from that company. The bonus of that was our volume incentives were good enough that they provided us with a digital mixing scale accurate to within 1/1000th of a pound. We keep several hundred pounds of mixing colors and pms colors on hand at all times and can have any other color ready within 15 minutes.

D. BINDERY

1. MBO Folder - The newest addition to the bindery is our MBO B123 continuous feed folder. The MBO is a highly versatile, high speed folder which produces an unrivaled fold. The continuous feed option allows for maximum run time without any down time for reloading. At its highest setting, the MBO can run 420 11 x 17 sheets per minute and because of no reload time lost, that equals 25,200 pieces an hour! The folder has spiral rollers of metal and rubber which allows for maximum grip on sensitive stock without marking. The right angle allows for right angle folding and in-line scoring/perforating and folding. The unique scoring wheels of the MBO can be configured so scores or perforations may be placed within 1/40th of an inch of each other on one pass. The quality of the MBO's fold makes it a perfect companion for our Glue-Bind system.

2. Dick Moll Glue-Bind Premailer - The Premailer was purchased as a response to customers who wanted to produce a promotional piece that could be used to return data to them. The system melds in with the folder so that a mailer can be folded, perforated and glued inline. The folder starts by perforating the piece so that the mailer can be separated from the flyer. The premailer itself adds a strip of remoistenable glue parallel to the perforated line at one head and two strips of wet glue at the other head. The folder then folds the panel perpendicular to the wet blue strips making a pocket. When the mailer is detached and remoistenable strip is licked and folded over, it seals the fourth side of the mailer, making it a return envelope.

3. Standard Horizon Booklet Maker - The Horizon MC-80 is a suction feed booklet maker with 16 bins. The suction feed collating tower is great for sensitive stock that roller fed machines find difficult or impossible to feed. The booklet making system also includes a stitcher head, a folder and a face trimmer. The Horizon can run sheets that range in size from 8-1/2 x 5-1/2 to 12-1/2 x 18-1/2. Running at top speed the Horizon can produce 2,000 books per hour or can collate 3,500 sets per hour.

4. Count M121 Numbering Machine - In addition to its obvious ability to number jobs, the M121 is a low-cost alternative to perforating and scoring jobs as well. The set up cost for the M121 is lower than the MBO folder and offers a comparable quality perforation and score. The M121 has two numbering heads that can be set for number repetition. The numbering heads can be cleaned quickly for color change, although most jobs use black or red ink numbers.

5. Challenge Drill and Beseler 1812 Polywrap Machine - The pieces that round out our bindery are the Challenge Drill and the Beseler Polywrap machine. The drill has three drill heads and drill bits ranging in size from 1/8" to 5/16". The shrinkwrap machine can wrap pieces up to 12" x 18".
